Frequent Questions

Does MARSSIM conflict with existing guidance?

MARSSIM is a technical best practices document. It was created to comprehensively address all phases of the surface soil survey process for demonstrating compliance with dose-based or risk-based requirements. This means that MARSSIM includes planning, conducting, evaluating, and documenting steps.

MARSSIM is flexible enough to use with many statutory programs, including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA); the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP); and Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). While many federal agencies and most state regulatory programs have accepted MARSSIM in their regulatory programs, it is best to consult with your program office, regulator, or agency representative if there are questions.
