What is Yucca Mountain?

In response to a congressional mandate in the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act, the Department of Energy (DOE) has proceeded with developing Yucca Mountain, located in Nye County, Nevada, as the proposed repository for radioactive waste. DOE has recently submitted a license application for the proposed repository. If the facility is approved, the site would be the nation's first geologic repository for permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive wastes. In the development of the planned Yucca Mountain repository, EPA's role is to set standards to protect public health and safety from the radioactive material in the repository.
